Cruise Along The Open Road
Suffolk rightly has a reputation as big sky country and what many visitors also find is our second best kept secret, the traffic free, quiet, undulating lanes on both the coast and in the countryside.
One great way of exploring these lanes and by-ways is behind the wheel of a classic open top sports car. Get behind the wheel of a classic Morgan or MGB and feel the wind in your hair as you follow a pre-planned route that takes you along the lanes that many visitors never find. Or how about a classic Alfa Romeo Spider, driving that around Southwold will feel like you're on the Amalfi Coast!
Places suggested on an Open Top Touring route may include the fishing hamlet of Orford, fish and chips on the beach in Aldeburgh, Ed Sheeran's Castle on the Hill in Framlingham or England's own Atlantis - Dunwich. As well as the beautiful Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that is the Suffolk Coast, the lanes and villages inland, with Chocolate Box cottages that are just as peaceful. How about a day in a 1968 Triumph Herald convertible driving down to historic Lavenham one of the famous Suffolk Wool Towns and then returning back along the Stour Valley through Constable Country? These are all very relaxed days out with plenty of time to stop, take in the scenery, and stretch your legs.
You may want to be Lovejoy for a day and do your own Antiques Roadtrip taking in a stately home. Well, the Morgan you could hire recently appeared on Celebrity Antiques Roadtrip driven by Nikki Chapman and Jules Hudson.
Hire with Open Top Touring starts with a 10 hour taster day which can be extended to an overnight hire or long weekend.
Cars of this age do require a little more concentration to drive than a modern vehicle as they don't have power steering or servo assisted brakes (exception to this is the Alfa Romeo) but you soon get the hang of it! Anyway the lanes you'll be going on do not allow for fast driving. The cars also have wonderful exhaust notes which may bring out the Mr Toad in you!
Obviously terms and conditions apply to a hire and these can be found on the company's website here, together with a list of all the cars available for hire, and why not follow them on Twitter @opentoptouring.
